SnakeMod Logo

A Deus Ex mod focused on quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes while trying to preserve the core game experience. Exploits are not fixed in this mod, and it’s actually easier to cheat if that’s what you want to do. I really just want players to have fun by fixing the not-fun things, and to not dictate how they play. But in all honesty, it’s just what I personally want the game to be. You can read the changes to see if it’s the right mod for you.

IMHO, probably a good mod for first-time players that want to experience the game vanilla first. But also good for returning players that want a clean, vanilla experience without all the bugs and 2000s jank. This mod will work for in-progress saves, but it is not tested for multiplayer and thus not recommended.

Improvements

  • Added a new system where players can learn codes (and logins) from any source and then are presented with a list of known codes in a new UI window whenever they use a keypad, computer, or ATM that they’ve learned a code for. Selected codes can then be entered automatically (with a simulated typing effect). Learned codes will properly persist through level changes, mission progression, and savegames. Works with existing savegames but will only “know” codes going forward.
  • Added a new version of the Ninja HUD theme (“Darkness”) that’s even darker so as not to blind the player when game brightness is turned up and in a dark area, i.e. most of the game. Also, added a function to reload themes so the new theme can be used in an existing savegame.
  • The Power Recirculator aug will now automatically activate whenever using it would decrease overall power use, and similarly will automatically deactivate whenever it is using up more power than it is conserving. (Shifter)
  • Made it so that an enemy that’s currently stunned or gassed won’t react to getting hit by a TRQ dart.
  • Headshots are no longer affected by the angle of the hit. (Transcended)
  • Made the flicker effect on lights much less intense.
  • Added the augmentation names to the tooltips when looking at augmentation cannisters. Previously, you had to pick them up to tell what augs were offered.
  • The use key no longer holsters weapons, so you won’t put away your weapon when accidentally missing trying to grab something in the world.
  • Crouch is preserved when loading games if toggle crouch is enabled. (Transcended)
  • In Mission 8, made tweaks to Daedalus’ datalink and the “Shady Guy” so they’re a little less confusing.
  • Added a few new console commands:
    • AllCodes: works with the new code learning system to allow the player to know all codes and logins
    • AllKnownCodes: allows the player to know all knowable codes and logins
    • Cheat: toggles cheat mode for use with key binds and without any convoluted command line arguments or console commands
    • ResetAugs: removes all the player’s augs
    • RespecAugs: removes all the player’s augs and drops the relevant aug cannisters at their feet so they can be reinstalled
    • ToggleHud, ToggleGhost, and ToggleInvisible: simplified toggle-able versions of existing cheats for use with key binds
  • Improved the AllWeapons cheat console command so that weapons are placed in a ring around the player instead of a big pile
  • Added Type (open console), Cheat, and ToggleHud to the control remapping menu for easy use without editing user.ini
  • Included optional HDTP support.

Fixes

  • In Mission 2, the player won’t be given a bloodthirsty reputation if Anna or the UNATCO troops kill some of the NSF at Castle Clinton. (Shifter)
  • In Mission 2, Ford Schick will always appear at Smuggler’s later if you rescued him. (Shifter)
  • In mission 2, prevents the second floor terrorists in the Ton from shooting the hostages if you’re creeping up from behind.
  • In mission 2, fixed the awkward door that opens and closes on its own in the warehouse basement.
  • In Mission 4, Paul won’t die if you saved him from the raid and then exit the hotel through the apartment window. (Shifter)
  • In Mission 4, fixed a book that gets destroyed by opening Paul’s closet. (HDTP)
  • In Mission 5, the player’s number of grenades will be properly placed in the Armory along with the rest of their gear. (Transcended)
  • In Mission 5, the player’s credits will also be confiscated and taken to the Armory. (Shifter)
  • In Mission 5, placed a new copy of a datacube that falls through the world in the MJ12 command center. (Shifter)
  • In Mission 6, corrected a typo issue that caused the Buddha display case in Maggie Chow’s apartment to not be movable in GOTY versions. (Shifter)
  • In Mission 6, disabled the idle chatter from MJ12 troops hiding in Maggie Chow’s apartment. (Shifter)
  • In Mission 6, stopped the Lucky Money escort from following the player around after the raid was finished.
  • In Mission 8, fixed the conversation where Ford Schick gives the player an item for rescuing him earlier.
  • In Mission 8, fixed a potentially game-breaking issue with the MJ12 ambush preventing Dowd’s conversation.
  • In Mission 8, fixed Dowd’s alliances so he doesn’t get scared of the security bot or riot cops walking near anymore.
  • In Mission 11, fixed the incorrect ATM username in the cathedral metro journal.
  • In Mission 12, made it so the Bob Page hologram doesn’t react to certain stimuli such as getting shot (and then start running around the level). (Shifter)
  • In Mission 14, fixed a security computer having a reversed username and password for a login that you could learn.
  • In Mission 15, fixed the guys on the tram reacting to the player when they can’t possibly get to or attack the player.
  • In Mission 15, removed a goal that hung around if the player went into the bunker through an alternate route.
  • Fixed a bug where starting a new game while playing an existing game could cause many items to carry over to the new game. (Shifter)
  • Fixed a bug with ATMs where the player could successfully login with an incorrect username and correct PIN. (Transcended)
  • Fixed the `AugAdd` cheat console command so that it properly upgrades when the player already has the aug installed.
  • Fixed the PRECACHING message appearing when alarms are triggered and untriggered (affected HDTP only).

Installation

  1. If you’re installing this mod fresh (not updating), backup (rename) your DeusEx.u file in DeusEx\System (and if you’re using HDTP, DeusEx\HDTP\System).
  2. Extract the files in this archive to your Deus Ex installation directory, maintaining path structure.
  3. Run the game and you should see “SnakeMod” version information on the main menu to confirm the mod is active.
  4. If you’re playing with an existing savegame, note that you will need to reload the themes from the Settings > Colors menu (or enter the command ReloadThemes in the console) to use the new HUD theme.

DirectX 10 Renderer HDR Fix

This modest adjustment to the HDR effect of the DirectX 10 renderer improves the playability of HDR by making the below changes. Remember that you need “Classic Lighting” turned off in the renderer settings to enable HDR.

  • The range of luminance adaptation levels is clamped between a high and low limit. Prevents overall too dark or too bright scenes.
  • The speed of the adaptation is vastly increased; it only takes about a second now instead of ~30 seconds.
  • The adaptation response is slightly less linear, so that both subtle changes in scene lighting have a smaller effect on adaptation, and bold changes have a greater effect.
  • There is a slight preference to the center of the screen when adapting luminance, so that what you’re looking at has a greater effect than what’s in the periphery.
