New apps and RoL beta

Website Fonts Finder

Website Fonts Finder

I’ve done a couple new apps recently. They’ve both been in the new-to-me .NET environment. The first one I made just to do it. It searches for instances of fonts in HTML code (either HTML, CSS, or script) using regular expressions and reports the findings through three lists.

Multimonitor Cursor Lock

Multimonitor Cursor Lock

The second app was born from necessity. I was tired of games not locking the mouse cursor into the current monitor, so I made a program to watch the selected app for focus and lock the cursor accordingly. This is obviously for multiple-monitor setups. It took about a week to code altogether but functions perfectly. It even has hotkeys to get you out of sticky situations. UltraMon can lock the mouse cursor to a certain monitor on hotkey press, but I knew I could do it better. My app locks the mouse cursor to whatever monitor the selected app is on automatically. It also locks it more efficiently by using the ClipCursor API function and checking to see if the app has focus or not. You can download both of these apps from my Apps page.

Also of interest is a recent Email that I received from Joe Pishgar, PR guy at Big Huge Games. He said that “several of [our programming team] outright insisted I do my best to get you into the Rise of Legends beta!”. Of course, it’s not like I’d say no to beta testing the “sequel” to Rise of Nations. I’m not sure when to expect my beta copy, but I suppose it should be within the next month by the way they’re hyping it now. Joe also mentioned that some of the programming team were quite impressed by my Script Maker for RoN.

Demos

Stymied by a slump in games to play, Vicky and myself have posted several demo reviews lately. These include Darwinia, Brothers in Arms, Myst V, Dungeon Siege 2, Tribes: Vengeance, and Civilization 4. Or you can see them all here.

I rule you.

Watch My Name is Earl. It’s got Jason Lee in it, you know, that guy from Mallrats. There’s also this smoking hottie that looks like Sandra Bullock with a chest.

Snake out.

Ramalicious, bitches!

Yesterday, I received my Christmas gift to myself, a stick of (get ready for some specs, bitches) 1GB OCZ DDR400 (PC3200) CL2-3-2-5 Platinum Edition RAM with a copper heat spreader. Of course, I already had 2 sticks of 256MB GEiL DDR400 CL2-3-3-6 Ultra RAM in a dual-channel configuration on my Asus A7N8X Deluxe v2.0 mobo. I was skeptical about putting three sticks of differing RAM in my mobo and it working. The rule is usually that it’s not a good idea to fill all your RAM banks, even with high-quality memory. Such setups can cause the system to not POST or crash or lock on memory-intensive apps. So I popped the new 1GB stick of RAM into the free slot and left the case in a work position in the likely case I needed to swap some sticks around. However, it posted fine and I proceeded to set the optimal timings of 2-3-3-6, which was as low as the GEiL sticks could handle. It booted into Windows fine and then handled 6 hours of Dungeon Siege multiplayer hosting like a champ. Later on, still dazzled that all three sticks were working together, I booted into Memtest86+ and ran most of the tests. It handled those flawlessly as well. I’m not sure if this is true or not, but on POST, it says that the two GEiL sticks are still running in Dual-Channel. However, it still performs on par with nVidia 333Mhz dual-channel systems in Sandra memory benchmarks. So there were no performance improvements in benchmarks, but you can really see it in the quality of gaming. Now I can max out texture settings in games and have no memory hitching. And games also can be minimized without memory swapping and exit instantly. I can also leave any number of explorer or browser windows open while playing games. It’s nice. I give this OCZ stick of RAM a big thumbs up.

I also got a Saitek Eclipse keyboard for Christmas, but I really could have used some of the other items on my list more (like a UPS, X-fi sound card, etc.). It’s good for gaming in the dark, but that’s about it. I wouldn’t recommend it for use just based on the badass factor of it glowing blue. The glowing actually makes it harder to read in decent or better lighting. I don’t think it’s angled enough and that makes it harder to read in the light or dark, because yes…I hunt and peck when I type. But I may prop it up more to fix the angle. Sometimes the wrist rest rattles, too. The keys feel nice, though. They’re about 33% softer than the ones on my previous MS keyboard. So, I’d only recommend it if you like to use your computer in the dark. Just don’t tell me what you’re doing in the dark if it’s not gaming. 😕

Also, Betty Crocker Warm Delights are the shiznit.

Some changes

I’m trying to make the site a more personal one now. I’m going to be either trimming out old features or putting them somewhere besides the navigation flash. I’m still working on figuring out what exactly I’m going to do. However, one thing I did want to do away with was the antiquated staff menu on the nav and all the little staff pages. Now it’s just one big about page that’s mainly about me and the function of the site. I also grooved up the nav a little. It looks a little choppy on IE, but Firefox works pretty well.

Anyways, watch for some changes while I’m on this glorious Christmas break. I also put together a little installer thing for some fonts I use on this site. You can find that here. I know you can use embedded fonts on pages, but that takes too fucking long to setup.

And again.

The server they moved the site to was also having issues, this time a memory one. It seems to have been fixed now…hopefully 😕 . The post for that is here.

Website server issues.

The reason for the intermittent and total site loss became known to me a few hours ago. Apparently, the server that my site was on had a bad CPU, so they had to move users around to newer servers :( . Unfortunately, the server they put me on required that they change my username, which also means all my absolute paths in scripts are fucked 😕 . It’ll take me a little while to get all the known problems corrected, and then you still may see some issues with other parts of the site. For more information on the problem, see this post.
