I’ll make an attempt to keep this short…no, there isn’t a new version of the TFC Ranking Program, but more on that later. I just wanna say that I’m extremely proud of my l33t $Kl!llZ (or whatever those cyber posers say) from playing Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II again. The first time I played it (about two years ago), I was already cheating by level 4 (fly mode, mostly). This time I haven’t cheated once and I’m already to level 17. All my restraint from killing friendly NPCs paid off, too, cause this time I got to pursue the light side of the force. I really didn’t want to have to kill Jan after level 15. She’s a damn fine woman and I hope she gives my a striptease when I kick Jerec’s ass. Anyways, here’s some screenshots:

My father just came in with the new PCGamer (August) and what’s on the cover? Why, it’s JC Denton sporting two FN P90s! Deus Ex 2…Badass! Also, looks like Raven is gonna make a Jedi Knight 2 with the Quake3 engine…Badass! It’s a good day to be a gamer, my friends.

And of course, I took an hour or two yesterday and today to do a few bug fixes and additions to the TFC Ranking Program. Remember, YOU can only edit the database ONCE (to create your member file). There’s going to be a reason for this later on. Here’s my plans for the next beta version (v1.3b probably):/p>

  • Text dumps (for the rank log and error log); it’s already in but needs some fine tuning (like scrolling)
  • When a death score of 0 is entered, the program with automatically compensate so there’s no divide by zero error; again, this is already in
  • Minimum kill score of 10; this won’t be too hard to add
  • Member rank and rank scores can be read from the “Read Database” function
  • Better error handling; doing my best with that
  • I’d like to add some encryption to the dat files; now that will be a lengthy bit of coding :(
  • Anything else you’d like to see, just lemme know and I’ll do it if possible

I was certain that it would be at least one more day, but it only took some time yesterday and 6 hours today to finish coding the official beta (v1.0b) of the TFC Ranking Program. I actually added 18kb to the program since yesterday’s v0.65b. I want all S&L members to test it with their own scores (doesn’t have to just be from TFC) and even pass it around to any gamers you know for them to test.

tfc-rank.exe (64kb)

You can only edit the database once to add yourself; the password is again “yoda”. The ranking system is totally functional, except it will only produce a rank score (reason for the beta). If you run into any errors, be sure to check the (new) errorlog.txt for details on what went wrong.

Because I suck at QBasic and my last achievement in using it to program was StoryTeller 2000, I’ve released the source code below so anyone who wants to can check my code and possibly make it more efficient. The passwords have been removed from the code, so don’t think you’ll find them in the source, biatches.

TFC.TXT (22kb)

I completed the next beta version (0.65b) of the TFC RANKING PROGRAM. The passworded sections are defaulted to be preaccessed (at least until version 1.0b).

tfc-rank.exe (56kb)

New to this version is the (suggested) member list and the database eraser/recreater. The major fix I made was when opening the database files (or any supporting files), if the file is not found, it will not produce blank fields (or crash the program) but instead a FILE NOT FOUND! error.
The ranking system is still not in, because I was perfecting some of the arrays and most of all the “actual scoring.txt” documentation. Please tell me if you see any “TFC module” errors, immediately.

And my great accomplishment for today is…

tfc-rank.zip (31kb)

I finally sat down and coded half of the first official ranking system, this one being for TFC. I started at about 1:30 earlier in the night, so that’s 11 hours of programming time put into 350 or more lines of code. This version doesn’t do any of the ranking calculations, but reads and writes from the member database.
So, try it out! The password to edit the database is “yoda” (without the quotes, of course). Sorry you have to type it every time you edit the database; later, I hope to get the program to write to the config file that you’ve entered the correct password. Please let me know if something seems unclear or you’ve found a bug. For added fun, type “x” in the main menu.

Okay, I think I actually fixed the mail server this time. Our host kinda has two entirely different mailing servers running at the same time, one is fully functional (but confusing as hell) and the other just sends forwards. Feel free to send mail to us to try it out, though.

I also had the pleasure of playing Infiltration with a member of the INF Team a few hours ago, Funkstylz; one of my favorite mappers and interviewee on INF-Radio. Being that he’s from Australia, he was playing on the DS clan’s Perth server. You know what, though? I OWNED funkstylz!!! Except on DM-INF-Kosovo, but he had the unfair advantage of making that map.

Anyone else tired of Loogie bitching at me?

This is the last thing today, I’m serious! I’m gonna go to bed after this and dream of fragging. A week ago I made a rough sketch of a planned Infiltration Deathmatch map after my English exam, it’s called DM-INF-Underworld. I believe I may have mentioned the idea to Quelog a couple weeks ago, but anyways, it’s based on a city sewer system. 50% of the map will be in darkness or near darkness (less than 64 light brightness) and CQB is the name of the game. I really want the P90 to (literally) shine in this map and to keep the damn M203ers from launching nades all over the place (which I will accomplish by putting in 3 different levels of sewer tunnels). The only tactics that you’ll have to use are listening for footsteps and effective use of lighting (or the lack of).
Alright, there’s your background information, now go check it out. downloads/sketch-lev1a.jpg (117kb) I know what I want certain bits of this map to look like, but am having trouble putting it all together. Give it a look, tell me if you like the idea so far.
